Executive functioning (EF) is the set of brain-based skills that helps a person manage daily life. It includes the ability to regulate emotions and impulses, hold information in mind, shift attention, plan and organize, and move through changes. Executive Functioning is not about intelligence or effort. It is about the brain's capacity to coordinate thoughts, feelings, and actions so a child can start tasks, stay with them, and recover when things get hard.
The NBI-EF Model organizes Executive Functioning skills into six Bridges. Each Bridge represents a developmental crossing that children must navigate daily. When a Bridge is weak, the child struggles. When it is supported, the child thrives.

When this Bridge is shaky
A child becomes overwhelmed easily, reacts impulsively, shuts down, or struggles to recover from big feelings. Why it matters Regulation is the foundation of all other executive skills. A dysregulated brain cannot access memory, planning, flexibility, and transitions are inaccessible. Ages 3–6 (Early Childhood) Children at this age rely almost entirely on coregulation. Their nervous systems borrow stability from adults. Strategies must be sensory-based, predictable, and simple. Ages 7–10 (Elementary) Kids begin developing internal regulation but still need external structure. They benefit from tools that help them understand their bodies and emotions. Ages 11–13 (Middle School) Regulation becomes more complex due to hormones, social pressure, and academic demands. Strategies must support emotional literacy, self-monitoring, and independence. Ages 14–18 (High School) Teens need strategies that support independence, emotional intelligence, and self-advocacy. Regulation becomes tied to identity, motivation, and stress management. Why it matters Working memory is essential for independence, school success, and daily routines. It is the "mental sticky note" of the brain. When it's overloaded, everything else becomes harder—directions, routines, transitions, and emotional regulation. Ages 3–6 (Early Childhood) Young children have very limited working memory capacity. They need concrete, visual, and hands-on supports to hold information long enough to act on it. Ages 7–10 (Elementary) Children begin to handle multistep directions but still need scaffolding. Working memory is fragile at this age, especially under stress, sensory overload, or transitions. Ages 11–13 (Middle School) Working memory demands increase dramatically—multiple classes, changing teachers, complex assignments, and social pressures. Students need tools that externalize memory. When this Bridge is weak, everything feels chaotic—backpacks, bedrooms, thoughts, assignments, and routines. Ages 3–6 (Early Childhood) Young children are not developmentally capable of independent organization. They need simple systems, visual cues, and adult modeling. Ages 7–10 (Elementary) This is the age where organizational skills begin to emerge—but inconsistently. Kids need external structure, visual systems, and guided practice. Ages 11–13 (Middle School) Organization becomes significantly harder due to multiple classes, changing teachers, and increased academic load. Students need systems, not reminders. Without it, even motivated children get stuck. It is the "action engine" of executive functioning. It is where overwhelm, procrastination, and shutdowns often begin. Flexibility must be taught through play, modeling, and gentle exposure to small, safe changes. Ages 7–10 (Elementary) Kids begin to understand that plans can change, but flexibility is still emotionally hard. They need scripts, visual supports, and guided practice. Ages 11–13 (Middle School) Flexibility becomes more complex: social dynamics, academic demands, and emotional intensity all require adaptive thinking.
